Salida, Colorado, is often described as a "small town with a big heart."  Chaffee County has more 14ers than any other place in Colorado.  Other outdoor activities include hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, camping, rafting, kayaking and four-wheeling. Monarch Ski Area is 20 miles away.   

 

The Arkansas River runs right through the middle of town. We celebrate our waterway with FIBARK (First in Boating on the Arkansas River), an international competition started in 1948. Competitors flip and spin in the kayak play holes or canoe the 26 miles downstream from Salida to Cotopaxi. 

 

In 2011, Salida hosted the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which featured the top cyclists in the world in an epic race across Colorado.  The media described it as mirroring the excitement of the Tour de France.

A haven for artists, sometimes they set up plein air sessions in the streets and aim to capture the historic sites.  At Artwalk, owners host open houses and demonstrations.  Second Saturday events showcase artists as well.

 

Famous artist Christo plans to drape the Arkansas River with fabric and the project is slated for 2015. More about "Over the River" at www.overtheriverinfo.com.  Analysts predict the project will bring 100,000s of visitors and millions of dollars to the area.  It will put Salida on the international map.

 

In the summer, the Salida Aspen Concert Series dazzles locals with international musicians from the Aspen Music Festival.  In the winter, the Walden Chamber Orchestra features former Dallas Symphony Orchestra members.

  

Despite its size of about 5,500, Salida provides excellent medical care and a regional hospital.  There are volunteer opportunities galore.  In Salida, your voice counts!
