Election Results in Chaffee County
November 6th, 2008 1:15 PM

Chaffee County waivers between Republican and Democrat, witnessed by the 5 vote difference between McCain and Obama!  A "blue" state senator was selected - Udall - while a "red" house representative - Lamborn - was chosen.  Republican candidates - Holman and Giese - were selected as county commissioners.  My husband, Dale, says he doesn't understand why this is a party job.  Incumbent Jerry Mallet was defeated, but, in a laissez faire fashion claims he's not sorry, he just reduced his work load by 80%!  Of five school issues, only one mill levy passed; the teachers deserve the voter-approved pay raise!  Lots of tax issues - a new lodging tax passed, along with a 1 percent increase in sales tax and repeal of the city portion of the property tax.  The latter goes towards improving city infrastructure - primarily street repair - yes!  The $4.82 per room per night fee will be used for recreation.  I've heard an analyst describe Chaffee County as 1/3 independent, 1/3 Republican, 1/3 Democrat.  In other words, we vote for the candidate.  Local observations from Leslie Walker, Broker/Owner.

Halloween in Salida
November 3rd, 2008 5:17 PM
Oct. 31, 2008--The town was awash with goblins, firefighters and tinkerbells young and old.  Salida celebrated the holiday with dress up parties and contests by the Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis, KHEN community radio and Wal-Mart.  Of course we knew it was coming because of the carved pumpkins, inflatable ghosts and straw scarecrows decorating houses weeks before.  Why write about this?  A friend who has moved here recently from Florida mentioned how enthusiastic people here are about the holiday.  She said nobody in Naples dressed up their homes!  What about their dogs?  I heard of an owner who costumed her labrador as a chicken!  Kids and Moms and Dads trick or treated way after dark, guess 'cuz it is so safe here.  And, the adults partied way after that!  These hometown observations compliments of Leslie Walker.
