As a member of the South Central Racing Club, I'm somewhat of an insider to the 4th Annual Salida Omnium.  The excitement has been mounting for months.  Of course, it has been dry forever, until the night of the time trials, then it pours.  Nevertheless, I volunteer at the start of the race, and quickly adopt the role of "jacket master."  Enough about me!  The participants come from 13 states to race in the State Games of the West and 2008 Tour of Colorado.  Tests include time trials, road races and criterium.  The word "Omnium" means a series of road races which awards prizes and points.  See 2008 race photos at www.stockerphoto.com. I was awed at the athletic ability - up to Olympic caliber.  My favorite, however, was the under 5 year olds on their tricycles.  These tiny winners even knew to raise their arms on the winners' podium!  My next endeavor?  The bicyclist for the end of August triathalon.  No name yet for the three competitors on my team.  Any ideas?  Leslie Walker, leslie@buysalida.com.  

No bats in the belfry, but at the Orient Land Trust.  One of my favorite warm-weather activities is to visit the San Luis Valley where up to 250,000 free-tail bats spend the summer.  A small group pot-lucked then drove to Valley View Hot Springs.  Our guide gave us a brief history of the area mining operations, while I craned my neck for any glimpses of nude people (it's clothing optional). Saw some!  After a 45 minute hike, we smelled the caves.  At dusk, a detector announced the flight of the bats.  About 6 inches wide, their wings whooshed as they clicked along (their form of communication, which probably translated to "Look the humans are out!")  This male-only colony travels up to 50 miles and eats an estimated 2-3 tons of insects EACH NIGHT!  Weeks later, my husband is still talking about it!
